Newark as a whole, and specifically the Ironbound district suffer from major air and ground pollution, flooding, and many other environmental injustices. The Urban Nature Trail Network will be the solution to resolve some of these injustices over time. In addition, the network of trails will be a place for residents of the Ironbound as well as Newark to experience firsthand the natural systems surrounding them. The trails will allow residents to learn and experience natural remediation of the land while witnessing nature in their backyard. As the program matures, free programs such as bird migration or flood mitigation will be offered to residents to allow further learning opportunities. Faculty: Brian McGrath

TERRELL TRAIL

Phase 1

Phytoremediation of soil is the process of using plants and trees to remove soil contaminants through the root system, absorbing, extracting and holding on to these toxins.

HYATT COURT FOREST TRAIL

Phase 2

Air remediation is done primarily through the uptake of pollutants within the leaf surface. The pollutants will be filtered through the surface of the leaf and transformed into healthy particles.

WETLAND TRAIL

Phase 3

A wetland will temporarily store, filter, and clean runoff water from a roof, lawn, and manage flooding. It will provide habitat for many butterflies, bees, salamanders, toads, frogs, and birds.

RIVERFRONT TRAIL

RIVERFRONT TRAIL

Phase 4

A wetland will temporarily store, filter, and clean runoff water from a roof, lawn, and manage flooding. It will provide habitat for many butterflies, bees, salamanders, toads, frogs, and birds.
